Churches in Cheltenham

Cheltenham Minster, St Mary's is the oldest building in Cheltenham and the town's only surviving medieval church. Tucked away peacefully in the town centre between Clarence Street and the High Street, this Grade I listed building has been a continuous site of Christian worship for over 850 years.

Originally known simply as St Mary's Church, it was officially designated as Cheltenham Minster in February 2013

St. Mary's Church in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham, is a historic Grade II* listed parish church that has stood at the physical and spiritual heart of the community for over 800 years.

Consecrated around 1190 as a "chapel of ease" to the mother church in Cheltenham, it is the oldest church in the village and features a blend of Norman origins and late medieval architecture. Today, it remains an active and welcoming Anglican parish serving the local community

St Peter's Church is a historic Church of England parish church located on Church Road in Leckhampton, Cheltenham. Nestled beautifully at the foot of Leckhampton Hill, this active Grade II* listed building serves as an inclusive and welcoming community hub under the Diocese of Gloucester.

Mosques in Cheltenham

Masjid ul Falah (also managed by the Cheltenham Muslim Association) is a welcoming Sunni mosque serving the local Muslim community in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Known for its warm community atmosphere and clean environment, the building was converted from a residential home into a dedicated space for congregational prayer, religious activities and children's madressah education.

The mosque has a capacity of around 100 people and features dedicated wudu (ablution) spaces. According to directory listings, it currently caters primarily to men and does not have dedicated spaces or services for women. It operates daily to accommodate the five daily prayers, typically opening around prayer times rather than staying open all day.

Other places of faith in Cheltenham

The Cheltenham Synagogue (home to the Cheltenham Hebrew Congregation) is an independent, Orthodox Jewish community located on Synagogue Lane in the heart of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Consecrated in 1839, the synagogue is highly celebrated as one of the finest examples of a small provincial Regency synagogue in the United Kingdom and holds a Grade II* listed status.

The Synagogue do not publicly display their opening hours, however you can make an enquiry via their website.

The Hindu Community Centre (also known as the Cheltenham Hindu Temple, operated by the Indian Association Cheltenham) serves as the central cultural and religious hub for the local Hindu population in Gloucestershire.

Housed in a building that is over 100 years old (originally a Methodist chapel), it features a community space and a main hall on the ground floor and a beautiful, traditional Mandir on the first floor with altars dedicated to deities including Sri Krishna, Ram, Hanumanji, Ganesha and Shiva.

Established in 1993, the centre belongs to the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) and serves as a local hub for anyone looking to reduce daily stress, learn practical meditation techniques, and explore modern Buddhist teachings in a warm, welcoming environment.

You do not need to be a Buddhist to attend, as the classes are designed to be universally accessible and applicable to everyday life
