It has an emergency department (A&E) and provides a wide range of services including surgery, maternity care and paediatrics, alongside specialist centres for cancer and cardiac care.
With its origins dating back to 1755, Gloucestershire Infirmary was granted the "Royal" title by King Edward VII in 1909. By the late 1940s, the Gloucestershire Royal Infirmary was renamed to the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, around the same time it became part of the National Health Service.
